Pure Light

As we try to teach Enzo of his world and himself, I am continuously amazed at his ability to teach us. Not just in the way we learn about how our species works and how we grow from birth to adulthood - but also in the stuff he reminds us of, things we have unlearned and forgotten.

The last days of fall are retreating now and we are constantly reminded of the bitter winter which should wash in any day now. We had our first snow before Halloween and have had quite a few achingly cold nights. Enzo is tiny right now but right about the time we want to make use of the park, it will covered in about 4 feet of snow and the path will be sheet ice.

So we've taken to walking him in the park while we have the chance.

Ever since he could focus on specific things, he has loved the sunlight. From our window, in the mornings, he will happily perch on my shoulder and coo at the light coming in over the surrounding rooftops. But nothing prepared me for his response when we went outside.

The moment the light touched his face, he gazed up at the sky with his eyes wide. His lashes danced in the breeze and he stuck his tongue out as if to taste the cold air. It was a completely animal, biological response and a reminder that we are children of our sun. While he experienced it for the first time and built that connection, I was forced to discard my jaded exterior and see it all anew through him.

I can't wait to hear what he thinks.
